My Design Journey at Spurt! - Alexander Onu

Written by Alexander Onu - Product Design Intern at Spurt!

In 2024, as a young artist eager to expand my skills and digitalize my services, I stumbled upon the fascinating field of graphic design.

Why I Chose Graphic Design

Graphic design captured my attention because it is a highly creative field that constantly challenges me to think differently. It pushes me to use the tools around me to solve complex design problems while also helping me grow—not just in my career, but also in my social interactions and personal development.

When I began my learning journey at Spurt!, I was introduced to Mattias, a seasoned visual storyteller skilled in both creating stunning visuals and building captivating web experiences. He guided me through my early steps in design, teaching me the fundamentals of typography, color theory, composition, and balance.

As I progressed, I had the privilege of meeting Gideon, a product analyst, and Oshifade, a product intern. My time with them reshaped my perspective, helping me realize that design goes far beyond the flyers I first imagined. They exposed me to new dimensions of design—such as website design (UI/UX), motion graphics, and the deeper art of effectively communicating the right message through visuals.

This broadened perspective sparked a desire in me to continue growing, learning continuously, and striving for excellence in every design I create. As the saying goes in the Holy Book, “Whatever is worth doing is worth doing well.”

Challenges Along the Way

Like every creative, I have faced my share of setbacks—limited access to essential design tools, moments of creative block, and difficulties in fully grasping certain tasks. Yet, each challenge has strengthened me. I have learned to adapt, persevere, and find innovative ways to solve problems.

What Keeps Me Growing

Two key principles continue to guide my journey:

1. Seeing design in everything I do—approaching life with a creative lens.

2. Embracing feedback—welcoming constructive criticism and using it to improve my work and satisfy my clients.

Looking Ahead

I believe there is still so much more to learn as I progress in this exciting field. My journey at Spurt! has been a foundation, but the road ahead holds endless opportunities to refine my craft, broaden my knowledge, and become the best version of myself as a creative.
